The Commission wishes, through this Website,
to present an overview of higher education in Kenya and to inform
the public of the quality assurance mechanisms which have been
put in place in the sector. Through this its hoped that there
will be greater public awareness on the institutions recognized
by the Commission for Higher Education and the World. The Website
also informs the public of the existing structure and operations
of the Commission which are geared towards ensuring quality in
higher education.

The current membership of the Commission is twenty eight (28) as stipulated
in section 4(1) – 4(5) Universities
Act 1985.
The Commission is the overall governing body. It executes its functions through specialist committees and the secretariat.

Commission for Higher Education is now ISO 9001:2008 certified. The Commission was bestowed with the coveted award by the Kenya Bureau of Standards with effect from 2nd of August 2011.

At independence in 1963, Kenya had
an enrolment of 30,000 pupils in the 151 secondary schools at the
time. This figure shot up to 600,000 pupils enrolled in 3,000 secondary
schools which had been established by 1991.
