Admission is through the following qualifications or their equivalents:

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)

  • A minimum aggregate of C+
  • Four subjects constituting the cluster of subjects required for the particular course of study
  • A minimum of C+ in each of the four subjects constituting the cluster of the subjects for the course of study
  • Certain courses of study place special requirements on specific subjects on the cluster of subjects, this then should be checked out by the candidate with the respective university for the intended course of study.

Advanced (‘A’) Levels

  • A minimum of 2 Principal passes
  • Specific courses of study ask for specific subjects at ‘A’ Levels and may also in addition ask for passes of certain subjects at the subsidiary or ‘O’ Levels.
  • Details on the specific course requirements should be checked out with the respective universities.

Diploma

  • Diploma from recognised tertiary institutions
  • A minimum aggregate grade at credit level
  • Subjects taken in the Diploma must be relevant to the proposed area of study
  • Some programmes allow for transfer of credit with Diploma.

Bridging Courses

  • Those who have not performed well in certain subjects required for certain programmes of study may take bridging courses offered by some of the universities
  • Bridging normally may be allowed in not more that two subjects
  • Bridging courses are available mainly for mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.

Language of Instruction

  • The language of instruction in all the universities is English
  • There is normally no specific requirement for the English language except that one should have an equivalent of a pass at ‘O’ Levels
  • In the cases where English is itself a specific requirement for a particular course of study, e.g. for the study of Law, a pass at a higher level may be required.

Application

Applications can be received by most of the universities at any time of the year. However the academic year normally runs from October to June with the period July, August, and September taken up as the long vacation. Practically all the universities however use the long vacation for either remedial teaching or as a practical semester for those on intensively practically oriented programmes.

Applications should be made to individual universities.
