Kenya‘s education system is structured into what is known as the 8:4:4 systems which includes 8 years primary education; 4 years of secondary education and 4 years of university education

Description of Education System

  • Early Childhood Education includes, Baby class, Nursery class and Pre-Primary class (caters for ages below 6) years;
  • Primary education – Duration is 8 years (free for public schools), entry age is 6 years and exit is 14 years (Certificate: Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE).
  • Secondary education – Duration is 4 years, entry age is 14 years and exit is 18 years (Certificate: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE));
  • University education is normally ranges between 4 years and 6 years (for medicine)

Higher Education System

Higher education comprises of post secondary school institutions and university level institutions.

Technical and vocational institutions
(national polytechnics, institutes of technology, technical training colleges);
Teacher training colleges;
Sectoral colleges within the various Government Ministries;
Non-Governmental institutions offering commercial and other skills; and
Institutions offering pre-university academic programmes

  • Public universities;
  • Private universities; and
  • Post secondary school institutions offering degree programmes in collaboration with local and / or foreign universities.
   
Competent Bodies are:

  • Ministry of Education for Post secondary school institutions;
