Cross-Border Higher Education

Description

Cross-border higher education in Kenya is provided through the following channels:

  • Collaboration between foreign universities and local universities;
  • Collaboration between foreign and post secondary school institutions;
  • Distance education through foreign universities: African Virtual University; and
  • E-Learning.

The Commission has developed Rules and regulations for cross-border higher education provided through collaboration between foreign universities and local post secondary school institutions. The Universities (Co-ordination of Post Secondary School Institution for University Education) Rules, 2004. However, it is challenge to the Commission to ensure quality in virtual universities and e-learning.

The Commission for Higher Education is responsible for university level education in Kenya

Universities Act Cap 210 B of 1985.

  • The Commission for Higher Education was established in 1985, among other things, to ensure quality in higher education, with particular reference to university education. It is a body corporate.
  • The Universities (Establishment of Universities, Standardisation, Accreditation and Supervision), Rules 1989.
  • The Universities (Co-ordination of Post Secondary School Institution for University Education) Rules, 2004.

Grading Systems are as follows:
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education

  • A, A- (distinction/very good);
  • B+, B, B- (credit/good);
  • C+,C,C- (average);
  • D+,D,D- (fair);
  • E (poor).

Higher Education

  • University Education
  • First Class Honours;
  • Second Class Honours (Upper division)
  • Second Class Honours, (Lower division)
  • Pass; and
  • Fail. OR
  • GPA System (1-4) is used mainly by private universities with foreign origins.   
  • Pass is C, Fail is D and below: for Medicine and Veterinary Medicine :
  • Distinction, Credit, Pass and Fail: for other institutions such as national polytechnics, institutes of technology, etc.
