Universities that are recognized, authorized or approved by the Commission

Public Univeristies
These are universities, established by Act of Parliament and largely supported from public funds.

  • University of Nairobi Established in 1970
  • Moi University Established in 1985
  • Kenyatta University Established in 1985
  • Egerton University Established in 1987
  • Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology Established in 1994
  • Maseno University Established in 2000
  • Western University College of Science and Technology Established in 2002

Private Univeristies
These are universities, established in accordance with the Universities
Act 1985 (cap 210B) and The Universities (Establishment of Universities)(Standardization, Accreditation and Supervision) Rules, 1989. They fall into the following three categories:-

(a) Chartered Universities

These are universities, which have been fully accredited by the Commission for Higher Education.

  • University of Eastern Africa, Baraton Awarded a charter in 1991
  • Catholic University of Eastern Africa Awarded a charter in 1992
  • Daystar University Awarded a charter in 1994
  • Scott Theological College Awarded a charter in 1997
  • United States International University Awarded a charter in 1999
  • Africa Nazarene University Awarded a charter in 2002
  • Kenya Methodist University Awarded a charter in 2006
  • St Paul's Univesity - Awarded a charter in 2007
  • The Pan African Christian University - Awarded a charter in 2008
  • Kabarak University - Awarded a charter in 2008
  • Strathmore University - Awarded a charter in 2008

    (b) Universities operating with Letters of Interim Authority (LIA)

    These are those universities that applied to the Commission for Higher Education for their establishment and fulfilled requirements as stipulated in the Universities Rules, 1989 and were issued with Letters of Interim Authority by the Commission for Higher Education.

  • Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology Awarded LIA in 2002
  • Aga Khan University Awarded LIA in 2002
  • Great Lakes University of Kisumu Awarded LIA in 2006
  • Gretsa University
  • KCA University - Awarded LIA in 2007
  • The Presbyterian University of Eastern Africa - Awarded LIA in 2007
  • Adventist University of East Africa - Awarded LIA in 2008
  • Mt Kenya University - Awarded LIA in 2008

The Commission is working with the institutions with LIA’s towards award of charters.
