FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

7.       Which institutions are authorized to operate in Kenya
The Commission maintains an up to-date list of all institutions that are authorized to offer university level education in Kenya.  See website www.che.or.ke for universities and post secondary school institutions.

8.       Why can’t the Commission close down illegal institutions of
higher education to protect Kenyans from exploitation?
The Commission for Higher Education is committed to eradicating sub-standard education providers from the system. To enable it to take action, it relies on public goodwill to relay information on an institution that appears suspect in its operations. Several institutions have been taken to court and their programmes stopped. Help us to help others- relay information about such institutions to us.

9.       Does the Commission offer loans or scholarships to students
pursuing higher education?
The Commission is not mandated to provide loans to persons in higher education institutions, the body charged with this responsibility is Higher Education Loans Board (HELB). They can be reached at the following address: P.O. Box 69480-00200 Nairobi or at helb@helb.co.ke

10.      Does the Commission assist individuals seeking funds for
     research work for post-graduate studies?
In the past, the Commission has not been responsible for fostering research at university level. However, during the 2005/2006 financial year, the government allocated Kshs. 65 million for research under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher education Science and Technology. The funds were disbursed by the Commission which selected the researchers through a thorough and comprehensive vetting process. The funds targeted the theme of food security which took cognizance of the government’s stated goals and the Millennium Development Goals and aspirations.
During the 2006/2007 fiscal year Kshs. 71 million has been set aside for research which will be geared towards research in water management. The submitted research proposals must:

    • Demonstrate relevance to Kenya’s general socio-economic objectives;
    • Incorporate innovations and processes;
    • Apply existing results for solving national priority problems;
    • Outcomes of the research must be of immediate benefit to society.

One major condition for a student to benefit from this fund  is that the student must collaborate with his/her supervisors such that they are the principal researchers.
