LIBRARY SERVICES

The Commission for Higher Education offers information services
to the secretariat, Commisssioners, students and staff of universities
in Kenya and the public. The information services offered include
library, Internet and public advisory.

The total library holdings are 4284 volumes containing materials
on higher education. The sitting capacity of the library is 25.
Borrowing of library materials is limited to the secretariat and
members of the Commission. 

The library collection is divided into four sections:
- The reference collection includes yearbooks, handbooks and directories on institutions and universities of higher learning.
- The books collection includes books on higher education – History of higher education, College teaching, institutions of higher education, accreditation, evaluation and ranking of universities, higher education finance, systems of higher education and other special aspects of higher education. University Calendars are also contained in this section.
- The periodicals collection includes journals, bulletins and newspaper on higher education.
- The Commission for Higher Education collection contains reports, Commission minutes and Proposals for the establishment of privately funded universities.
 
The Commission for Higher Education has not been left behind in
the use of information technology. Internet and Email services are
provided to staff and Commissioners. Some journals are also available

The library catalogue is fully automated using the CDS/ISIS software.
In-house databases have been created using this software. These
include the main library database with 1544 records, an index to
newspaper cuttings articles on higher education, and a database
on degree programmes offered in Kenyan universities.

A database on student enrollment in Kenyan Universities has also
been created
The library also has a collection of CD-ROM databases on higher
education including ‘the World Higher Education Database 2000’
which combines the latest databases of the International Handbook
of Universities and the World list of Universities.

These information services are used in supporting decision making
for the Commission, in providing information for research in higher
education and in advising the public on higher education systems
in Kenya and abroad.

In 2005 over 2000 people visited the resource center.
The resource center is opened from 8am – 5pm (weekdays) and
closed during weekends and public holidays. |
